Collagen peptides are short chains of amino acids produced by breaking down native collagen, a structural protein found in skin, bone, and connective tissue. The hydrolysis process cleaves the long triple-helical collagen molecule into smaller fragments. These fragments typically range from about 2 to 20 kilodaltons in molecular weight. Unlike intact collagen, collagen peptides dissolve in water and do not form gels. Commercial preparations appear as powders, granules, or liquids.
The amino acid profile of collagen peptides is distinctive. Glycine is the most abundant residue, followed by proline and hydroxyproline. Hydroxyproline is uncommon in other proteins and serves as a useful marker for collagen content. Cysteine and tryptophan are present only in trace amounts. The exact composition depends on the animal source, such as bovine hide, porcine skin, or fish scales, and on the hydrolysis conditions used. Marine sources often contain lower proline and hydroxyproline levels than mammalian sources.
Several terms describe related products, and their distinctions matter. Gelatin is partially hydrolyzed collagen that still forms a gel when dissolved in hot water and cooled. Collagen peptides, also called collagen hydrolysate, are further broken down and remain soluble without gelling. The term 'collagen' alone usually refers to the intact, insoluble protein. Commercial collagen peptides are often standardized by molecular weight range rather than by a single molecular species, so batch-to-batch variation occurs.
Molecular weight distribution is a central quality attribute because it influences solubility, viscosity, foaming, and sensory properties. High-performance size-exclusion chromatography with refractive index or multi-angle light scattering detection can estimate average molecular weight and polydispersity. The degree of hydrolysis is sometimes measured by quantifying free amino groups with trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid or o-phthalaldehyde. Results depend on calibration standards and mobile-phase conditions, so method details matter when comparing certificates of analysis. Reported values are operational rather than absolute unless the method is fully validated.
Collagen peptides are hygroscopic and can cake or lose flowability when exposed to moisture. Typical storage is in sealed containers at ambient temperature, away from direct sunlight and strong odors. High humidity and prolonged heat may increase Maillard browning, off-odors, or microbial risk. Food-grade specifications commonly set limits for moisture, ash, heavy metals, and total plate count. Stability studies often monitor appearance, moisture, molecular mass profile, and microbial counts over defined intervals.

Hydrolysis conditions determine the peptide size profile, which in turn affects solubility, viscosity, taste, and behavior in formulations. Products may contain free amino acids, di- and tripeptides, and larger fragments up to tens of kilodaltons. Average molecular weight is often reported, but the distribution is more informative because two materials with the same average can differ in peptide profile. Ultrafiltration, spray drying, and ion exchange may be used to standardize the final powder. The relationship between specific peptide sequences and measured effects remains an active area of study.
Collagen peptides are short protein fragments produced by breaking down native collagen, the main structural protein in skin, bone, tendon, and cartilage. The term usually refers to hydrolyzed collagen, a mixture of peptides rather than a single defined molecule. Enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis cleaves peptide bonds, lowering molecular weight and improving water solubility relative to intact collagen. Commercial material is commonly described by average molecular weight, source tissue, and extent of hydrolysis rather than by a unique sequence.
Most commercial collagen peptides derive from bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin, or poultry cartilage, with fish sources often having lower thermal stability. Their amino acid profile is distinctive: glycine appears at roughly every third residue in the parent collagen triple helix, and proline and hydroxyproline are abundant. Collagen itself lacks tryptophan and is low in several essential amino acids, so collagen peptides are not a complete protein source. Source tissue and processing can influence peptide length, amino acid composition, color, odor, and mineral content.
Analytical results are method-dependent, so comparisons across studies require caution. Different molecular weight cutoffs, standards, and calculation models can shift reported averages. Hydroxyproline content is sometimes used as a marker for collagen-derived material, but it does not reveal peptide sequence or biological activity. Regulatory status varies by country and intended use, with some markets treating hydrolyzed collagen as a food ingredient and others as a dietary supplement. Open questions include how to standardize potency and verify claimed peptide profiles.
Quality control for hydrolyzed collagen begins with identity testing and raw material traceability. Laboratories may verify protein content by Kjeldahl or combustion methods, and characterize molecular weight distribution using size-exclusion chromatography or gel electrophoresis. Amino acid analysis confirms the presence of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline in expected proportions. Moisture, ash, and microbial limits are also monitored because powders can absorb water. These tests help distinguish hydrolyzed collagen from gelatin, whey, or plant protein ingredients.
In nutrition and food science, collagen peptides are discussed as a protein source rather than a complete protein. They lack sufficient amounts of some essential amino acids, notably tryptophan, so they cannot alone support all protein requirements. Research often examines their functional properties, such as foam formation, emulsification, and water binding. Studies also compare bioavailability and absorption of small peptides versus free amino acids. Questions remain about how consistently specific peptide sequences reach target tissues after ingestion.
Collagen peptides are short chains of amino acids produced by hydrolyzing collagen from animal connective tissues. The parent protein occurs in skin, bone, tendons, and cartilage, where it provides tensile strength. Hydrolysis breaks native triple-helical structures into smaller fragments, improving solubility in water. The resulting mixture consists mainly of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and other residues. Commercial ingredients are often described by average molecular weight rather than a single defined molecule.
Industrial production typically begins with raw materials such as bovine hide, porcine skin, fish skin, or eggshell membrane. A pretreatment step removes fat and non-collagenous proteins, after which enzymes or acid/alkali conditions cleave peptide bonds. Manufacturers then purify, concentrate, and dry the hydrolysate into a powder. The degree of hydrolysis influences peptide length, solubility, and taste. Because source and process vary, two collagen peptide powders can differ in amino acid profile and molecular weight distribution.
This is a list of people who disappeared mysteriously during the 1990s or whose deaths or exact circumstances thereof are not substantiated. Many people who disappear end up declared presumed dead and some of these people were possibly subjected to forced disappearance. This list is a general catch-all; for specialty lists, see Lists of people who disappeared.
Structures that are intraperitoneal are generally mobile, while those that are retroperitoneal are relatively fixed in their location. Some structures, such as the kidneys, are "primarily retroperitoneal", while others such as the majority of the duodenum, are "secondarily retroperitoneal", meaning that structure developed intraperitoneally but lost its mesentery and thus became retroperitoneal.
=== Degrowth === Effective accelerationism stands in stark contrast with the degrowth movement, sometimes described by it as "decelerationism" or "decels". The degrowth movement advocates for reducing economic activity and consumption to address ecological and social issues. Effective accelerationism on the contrary embraces technological progress, energy consumption and the dynamics of capitalism, rather than advocating for a reduction in economic activity.
=== Hu-PBL-scid model === The human peripheral blood lymphocyte-severe combined immunodeficiency mouse model has been employed in a diverse array of research, encompassing investigations into Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated lymphoproliferative disease, toxoplasmosis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and autoimmune diseases. These studies have highlighted the effectiveness of the hu-PBL-SCID mouse model in examining various facets of human diseases, including pathogenesis, immune responses, and therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, the model has been utilized to explore genetic and molecular factors linked to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, offering valuable insights into the pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets for these conditions. This model is developed by intravenously injecting human PBMCs into immunodeficient mice. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells to be engrafted into the model are obtained from consented adult donors. The advantages associated with this method are that it is comparatively an easy technique, the model takes relatively less time to get established and that the model exhibits functional memory T cells. It is particularly very effective for modelling graft vs. host disease. The model lacks engraftment of B lymphocytes and myeloid cells. Other limitations with this model are that it is suitable for use only in short-term experiments (<3 months) and the possibility that the model itself might develop graft vs. host disease.

=== Emotional changes === A 2017 population-based, matched-cohort study of 93,197 men aged 66 years and older with BPH found that finasteride and dutasteride were associated with a significantly increased risk of depression (HRTooltip Hazard ratio, 1.94; 95% CITooltip Confidence interval, 1.73–2.16) and self-harm (HR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.34–2.64) during the first 18 months of treatment, but were not associated with an increased risk of suicide (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.53–1.45). After the initial 18 months of therapy, the risk of self-harm was no longer heightened, whereas the elevation in risk of depression lessened but remained marginally increased (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.08–1.37). The absolute increase in the rate of depression was 247 per 100,000 patient-years and of self-harm was 17 per 100,000 patient-years. As such, on the basis of these findings, it has been stated that cases of depression in patients that are attributable to 5-ARIs will be encountered on occasion, while cases of self-harm attributable to 5-ARIs will be encountered very rarely. There were no differences in the rates of depression, self-harm, and suicide between finasteride and dutasteride, suggesting that the specific 5-ARI used does not influence the risks. The absolute risks of self-harm and depression with 5-ARIs remain low (0.14% and 2.0%, respectively).

=== Investigations === Diabetic ketoacidosis may be diagnosed when the combination of hyperglycemia (high blood sugars), ketones in the blood or on urinalysis and acidosis are demonstrated. In about 10% of cases the blood sugar is not significantly elevated ("euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis"). A pH measurement is performed to detect acidosis. Blood from a vein is adequate, as there is little difference between the arterial and the venous pH; arterial samples are only required if there are concerns about oxygen levels. Ketones can be measured in the urine (acetoacetate) and blood (β-hydroxybutyrate). When compared with urine acetoacetate testing, capillary blood β-hydroxybutyrate determination can reduce the need for admission, shorten the duration of hospital admission and potentially reduce the costs of hospital care. At very high levels, capillary blood ketone measurement becomes imprecise. In addition to the above, blood samples are usually taken to measure urea and creatinine (measures of kidney function, which may be impaired in DKA as a result of dehydration) and electrolytes. Furthermore, markers of infection (complete blood count, C-reactive protein) and acute pancreatitis (amylase and lipase) may be measured. Given the need to exclude infection, chest radiography and urinalysis are usually performed. If cerebral edema is suspected because of confusion, recurrent vomiting or other symptoms, computed tomography may be performed to assess its severity and to exclude other causes such as stroke.
The absence of the enzyme has no negative effect on growth and the bacteria show no phenotypeic differences, with the exception that lactobacillic acid or other cyclopropanoic acids do not occur among the fatty acids present. A similar experiment was carried out with artificially produced mutants of Brucella abortus. The bacteria are still able to multiply in macrophages, so lactobacillic acid has no effect on the intracellular life cycle. However, if the bacteria are cultivated in a culture medium with a low pH value and high osmolarity, less growth can be observed compared to the unmodified cells. These conditions can be transferred to the survival of B. abortus in the environment, where an acidic environment with high osmolarity can also occur. The mutants that do not produce lactobacillic acid have poorer chances of survival there and consequently cannot be transferred to a host as easily as is the case with a smear infection, for example. The study of the promoter of the cfa gene also shows that expression is promoted by low pH and high osmolarity, i.e. the enzyme CFA synthase is formed under these conditions. From the point of view of energy metabolism, the formation of the cyclopropane ring in lactobacillic acid means a relatively high energy expenditure for the cell. The S adenosylmethionine, which acts as a carrier of the methylene group, must then be regenerated from S adenosylhomocysteine. This is associated with the hydrolytic cleavage of three ATP molecules per molecule.
Surf City Squeeze was started in the early 1980s by Kevin Blackwell and his wife Kathi, and later became a franchise. Later, in 1998/1999, Sports Group International, Inc. (a company that was originally formed to distributed Spalding-branded sports drinks) merged with Surf City Squeeze with Surf City Squeeze's management taking over full control of the company. Also in 1999, Sports Group International purchased Frullati Cafe & Bakery Chain, bringing the total number of its franchised locations to 200. In 2001, Kevin Blackwell changed the name of his company from Sports Group International to Kahala Corp. after terminating an agreement with Spalding. Also in 2000, Kahala Corp. then developed the Rollerz brand. From 2002 to 2006, Kahala Corp. purchased Ranch One Grilled Chicken, Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill, Taco Time, Great Steak, Johnnie's New York Pizzeria, and Blimpie. Kahala also acquired the license to Wafflo. In 2007, Kahala Corp and Cold Stone Creamery agreed to merge creating a combined company holding 13 diversified brands. The combined company generated more than $1.1 billion in system wide sales in partnership with 3,000-plus franchisees and more than 4,600 retail locations. As a result of the merger, Kahala's CEO Kevin Blackwell and Cold Stone Creamery's CEO and chairman Doug Ducey were respectively appointed chairman and CEO of the new combined company, Kahala-Cold Stone. Ducey left a few months later to join tech start-up iMemories after being forced out by Blackwell. In July 2007, Kahala-Cold Stone acquired Cereality Cereal Bar & Cafe.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a gonadotropin, a glycoprotein polypeptide hormone. FSH is synthesized and secreted by the gonadotropic cells of the anterior pituitary gland and regulates the development, growth, pubertal maturation, and reproductive processes of the body. === Dosage forms === Lidocaine/prilocaine eutectic mixture is marketed as a 5% oil-in-water emulsion incorporated in a cream base (EMLA cream) or a cellulose disk (EMLA patch). The cream is applied under an occlusive dressing, while the patch incorporates an occlusive dressing to facilitate absorption of lidocaine and prilocaine into the area where anaesthesia is required. Local dermal anaesthesia is achieved after approximately 60 minutes, whereupon the occlusive dressing (or patch) is removed. The duration of anaesthesia is approximately two hours following removal of the occlusive dressing. E. Fougera & Co., makers of the generic cream widely used in the United States as Lidocaine and Prilocaine Cream, 2.5%/2.5%, recommends different timing for application of the cream as well as length of anesthesia. They state the cream must be applied at least one hour before the start of a routine procedure and for two hours before the start of a painful procedure. Additionally, they state that the duration of effective skin anesthesia will be at least one hour after removal of the occlusive dressing.

No. Native collagen is a large, triple-helical protein that is insoluble in water. Collagen peptides are shorter fragments produced by hydrolysis, and they dissolve readily. Digestion further breaks these peptides into amino acids and small peptides.
Most commercial collagen peptides fall between 2 and 20 kilodaltons. Some products contain a narrower range, such as 2 to 5 kilodaltons. The distribution depends on the hydrolysis method and raw material.
Glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline account for a large share of the residues. Hydroxyproline is particularly characteristic and is often used to identify collagen-derived ingredients. Tryptophan and cysteine are scarce.
Purity is assessed through a combination of protein content, hydroxyproline, amino acid composition, and chromatographic profile. Moisture, ash, and microbial tests cover non-protein impurities and handling quality.
